The Helpful Tips For Caring For Your Pom Poms

Nothing is more exciting than receiving new cheer poms to decorate your home for the upcoming season. The excitement can quickly drop when the box is opened and the poms become flat. Some poms may need a little help to reach their full potential. Although most cheer pom poms are pre-fluffed, they may require some extra care before you perform your first show.

These are the steps to make poms look their best.

1. Open your package carefully

There is no Whack-a-Mole game here. You don't need sharp objects to open your shipment. If you're not careful, you could damage some of the poms in your box. To open the box, you can use a box cutter but don't press too hard.

2. Separate the Strands

After you've double-checked your order, fluff the poms. Some strands might be stuck together. The manufacturer might trim the strands and then run them through a large machine that cuts the entire bundle at once. The cutting machine presses the pom material together tightly to prevent a twisted strand.

This step is the most difficult because you may have to go stand-by strands to separate them. Turn on your favorite binge-worthy TV show, and start to separate each strand from the others. Bring it to the side of the pom. As if you were peeling a banana. Don't fold it in a crease. Just pull the strand until it is free from its friends. Continue pulling until the strands are all separated. This could take between 30 minutes and an hour for each pom. This is the fun part.

3. It's like a polaroid photo.

You can hold the pom at the handle and shake it like a cheerleader who just won the state championships.

Continue shaking it until the desired shape is achieved.

You may notice some strands that need to be separated. If so, continue with step 2. Keep going with each pom, until you have all your poms ready for game day.

4. It's your love, keep it!

When your poms have been prepared for competition or game day, it is important to keep them safe from being crushed. The poms are made of strong materials and should be able to shape themselves with a little shaking. However, you need to avoid getting the strands caught in zippers or crushed by math textbooks.

After you return from practice or a game, take your poms out and place them in a visible and safe location. These steps will ensure that your poms last a lifetime.
